Listening Session
Celebrating 100 years of John Coltrane. Why does a musician who passed away nearly six decades ago still sit at the centre of jazz education? Because John Coltrane changed what musicians thought they could do with music. He began on clarinet, moved to alto saxophone at fifteen, then to tenor. In Philadelphia, he immersed himself in Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, learning by ear, by transcription and through relentless practice. Years of work followed: the Navy, R&B bands, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, then Miles Davis in 1955. A summer with Thelonious Monk in 1957 sharpened his understanding of harmony. Coltrane took all of it in and kept pushing. Join us this Saturday for an evening with the records of John Coltrane. Free Entry via RSVP.
